Preaching With Ulterior Motives | Institute of Love

There are people who are bitterly jealous and have selfish ambition in their hearts, and they cover up the truth about their real motives with boasting and lying. (See James 3:14) You see this sort of thing happening a lot among pastors and ministers who preach out of jealousy and rivalry. They do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. The apostle Paul also found that out when he said; they preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely, intending to make my chains more painful to me. (See Philippians 1:15-17) 
The Bible says that “jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.” James 3:15-17 NLT  I like Paul's humble attitude towards those who preach Christ out of jealousy, competition, and selfish ambition; “But that doesn’t matter. Whether their motives are false or genuine, the message about Christ is being preached either way, so I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice.” Philippians 1:18 NLT
