First of all, everyone lies
from time to time, but for a compulsive liar, telling lies is routine. A compulsive liar will
resort to telling lies regardless of the situation - it becomes a habit, a way
of life, a second nature if you will. Lying is their normal and reflexive way
of responding to questions. Compulsive liars bend the truth about everything,
large and small. For a compulsive liar, telling the truth is very awkward and
uncomfortable, while lying feels right. Compulsive lying is usually thought to
develop in early childhood, due to being placed in an environment where lying
was necessary. For the most part, compulsive liars are not overly manipulative
and cunning, rather they simply lie out of habit, an automatic response, which
is hard to break and one that takes a toll on a relationship.
A sociopath, for instance, is typically defined as someone who lies
incessantly to get their way and does so with little concern for others. A
sociopath is often goal-oriented. Sociopaths have little regard or respect for
the rights and feelings of others. Sociopaths are often charming and
charismatic, but they use their talented social skills in manipulative and
self-centered ways. Sociopaths cannot be changed!
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT BEING A LIAR
When someone is a compulsive liar he or she exhibits the character of
the devil, who always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the
father of lies! (See John 8:44)
It also says that it is no surprise that the devil, a.k.a. Satan, disguises
himself as an angel of light and that it is no wonder that his servants also
disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. (See 2. Corinthians 11:14-15)
Compulsive
liars deceive others and will themselves be deceived! (See 2. Timothy 3:13)
If
you have the lifestyle of a compulsive liar, whether you call yourself a
Christian or not, unless you repent your fate will be in the fiery lake of
burning sulfur. (See Revelation 21:8)
That’s why the Scriptures say that,
“Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth
that comes from Him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of
life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew
your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like
God—truly righteous and holy.
So
stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of
the same body!” Ephesians 4:21-25 NLT
